Early menopause is what we call menopause occurring in a woman younger than 40.

It may occur:

  • naturally when the ovaries have stopped working
  • surgically when a woman has her ovaries removed or
  • chemically from chemotherapy/radiotherapy for cancer.

Early menopause has symptoms similar to those of natural menopause.

Due to the long-term effects of oestrogen loss, the risks of developing osteoporosis or heart disease
are higher for women who have gone through early menopause.

It is important to seek advice from your health practitioner.
