A couple who present with infertility have a number of routine investigations performed. 

For men

All men should have a semen analysis (done at a specialised laboratory) including  an immunobead test (to detect antibodies to sperm).

For women

Women should have hormonal profile testing (FSH and E₂) on day 2 to 4 of their menstrual cycle to check ovarian reserve.

Women should also have their tubal patency and pelvic anatomy checked, ideally by  laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, dye studies and dilatation and curretage (to ensure that no uterine pathology exists and to confirm histological endometrial dating.

However, if there is a significant male causative factor or the woman has premature ovarian failure/ significantly low ovarian reserve, this need not be carried out due to the likehood of requiring IVF for treatment.

Testing

The hormonal profile and semen analysis can be ordered by a GP prior to specialist referral.
